Jason Hackenwerth

Jason Hackenwerth was a painting major who worked his way through art school making balloon animals at kids parties. Now his balloons are his art. I love that they look like blown up microorganisms.





Jason's having a really great art installation at the 2424 building on York street in fishtown. The opening is on Friday, and you better go now because the balloons tend to wilt over time.

Vancouver Taxidermy

I am super excited about my upcoming pacific northwest trip. Especially the Museum of Vancouver's taxidermy exhibit.

Here's what their site says about the exhibit,

"Displaying the Museum of Vancouver’s extensive collection of taxidermy for the first time in decades, Ravishing Beasts investigates the provocative and strangely alluring world of taxidermy.

Whether a hoarding of exotic curiosities, a scientific archive, a hunting trophy, or a stuffed pet, taxidermy always exposes longings to capture animals and tell stories about their significance within human lives.

The exhibition confronts viewers with the visual power of taxidermy. It invites us to examine taxidermy’s cultural aesthetic, scientific history, and revival in art and design, and to question the legacy, current value, and future relevance of the practice."

Would someone please tell me how the Japanese crafting culture got so cool? Look at these books that come with full size patterns for you to create more clothes and bags. Their design is so minimal and tailored and BEAUTIFUL!

Sewing

I want to learn how to sew better. I can sew a straight line, and can make curtains or pillows with relative ease, but I think I'm ready for the next step. I want to make some clothes. So I ordered a couple patterns from the Simplicity website.



I figured I would start with the Built by You series, and then try my hand at something a little harder with the Cynthia Rowley Pattern...I'm really excited about that necklace!

Wilson Bentley

If you like snowflakes, and science, and photography you'll love Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley. He's responsible for the discovery that no two snowflakes are alike, and was the first person to photograph a snowflake. He was was an American farmer and snow crystal photomicrographer, who during his lifetime captured some 5000 snow crystal images. They can be seen is his book Snow Crystals


I like the idea of that they're all unique, but also that they won't last. That they are fleeting beauties.

Predator Mittens

Aren't these predator vs. prey mittens so cute?! I used to have hyena gloves, but I lost one on a road trip. I'm a nerd for puppets.

2010

As scatter brained as I am, you might be suprised that I love day planners especially new empty day planners. I like the idea of the possibilities that they hold. The one I chose for 2010 is the Rhodia Planner. LOOK HOW AWESOME IT IS! Super simple, clean lines, and graph paper. It also comes in black.

I wonder

I wonder what tumblr's doing to us.

Exposing us to so many images, completely seperated from context. Total visual overload. One after the other after the other after the other. I'm realizing that I find most of my inspiration completely seperated from it's intention and reduced down to lines and shapes and colors. I can barely remember designer's names anymore. Nothing has a story. I want more stories. I want more than just pretty pictures. I think I need more than just recycled images.

I want to go to the library.

Wedding Time Lapse

One of Jason's friends Allen Hamton flew up from Tampa to make a beautiful mural for our block party wedding. He did it on our neighbors house all with spray paint. Here's a time lapse of the 10 hour process.
